CBD Explained

CBD, short for cannabidiol, refers to a non-psychoactive chemical compound abundantly found within cannabis plant varieties. Because this compound is non-psychoactive, that means it can’t get you high and won’t leave you feeling intoxicated in any way, shape, or form.

To obtain, we extract CBD from organic hemp plants, a plant that was legalized in the US by the 2018 Farm Bill. Therefore, it is completely safe and legal for use in all 50 states, as long as the extract contains less than 0.3% THC. While CBD and THC are often used interchangeably, the main fundamental difference between CBD and THC is the fact that CBD is non-psychoactive.

CBD has serious potential towards supporting full-bodied health and wellness, so much so, the FDA approved the first ever cannabis-derived medicine for rare forms of epilepsy such as Dravet syndrome and Lennox-Gastaut syndrome (LGS) Epidiolex, which contains CBD. Though we are just in the infancy stages of research, the medical sector is just now starting to fully understand the therapeutic applications of CBD, and we are hopeful more will be discovered.

CBD And Your Body

The human body is riddled with cannabinoid receptors (CB receptors), which are found within the body’s natural endocannabinoid system (ECS). The two most well-known CB receptors found in the endocannabinoid system are CB1 (found mainly in the nervous system) and CB2 receptors (mainly found in the immune system). They are designed to interact with both cannabinoids (exogenous) produced by external sources such as plants, as well as naturally-occuring (endogenous) cannabinoids the body produces itself, scientifically referred to as endocannabinoids. If the ECS system fails to function properly or has deficient endocannabinoid levels, there’s a great risk of becoming susceptible to a number of health difficulties.

When introduced into the body, CBD works interacts with CB1 and CB2 receptors without directly activating them, helping with the regulation of important bodily functions such as mood, appetite, pain management, and many more. Thus, CBD can help create internal balance, or homeostasis, within the body, promoting overall health and wellness. We are discovering so much about CBD’s medicinal potential and the evidence of the harmony it creates is clear that it deserves more attention as well as research. Due to its purported health benefits, CBD may provide relief from a wide variety of ailments, as it is non-addictive and doesn’t have any overdose or withdrawal potential.

Full Spectrum CBD vs. Broad Spectrum CBD

Full-spectrum CBD products essentially refer to ‘whole plant’ extracts that contain the full spectrum of chemical compounds including CBD and other lesser-known cannabinoids (CBN, CBC, and CBG), and terpenes found within the hemp plant. Full-spectrum extracts contain less than 0.3% THC and produce the ‘entourage effect’. The chemical compounds of full-spectrum products possess synergistic properties that can provide an even greater therapeutic effect when working in unison than they would individually.

Broad-spectrum CBD products contain cannabidiol and other cannabinoids and absolutely no THC. Though this type of extract will not produce an entourage effect, each bioactive chemical contained in broad spectrum products have their own set of unique effects that can promote full-bodied wellness.
